WHAT WE DO.
We help you 'travel without impact'. Whatever type of travel that you're dreaming of, we can help you get there. The difference is that we will actively search out the flights, hotels, activities and experiences that are committed to minimising your impact on the environment and those that benefit local communities. There are a number of ways that we can make a difference but some of the key principles we follow at Sustainable Travel Co are; direct flights, locally owned accommodation, small group tours with companies that work sustainably, and 'slow travel'. We also donate a portion of every booking to trusted organisations fighting against deforestation, as well as local projects right here in New Zealand.
The majority of carbon is burned during take-off and landing, so we recommend flying the most direct route possible. When available, trains and buses can be a great way to lower emissions while also giving you the chance to see more of
When booking accommodation, we work with locally owned hotels and resorts that reinvest their money back into the local community. We look for places that have initiatives to support the local environment and conserve the ecosystem from which they benefit. Booking accommodation with sustainable practices that utilise solar energy, rain and bore water and banning single-use plastics can help ensure your travel is beneficial to the destination you visit.
Small group tours allow you to get off the beaten path and visit communities and attractions that many people don't get to see. Local guides can give great insight into a destination and help you connect with the places you visit.
Slow travel is an approach to travel that emphasizes connection: to local people, cultures, food and music. It relies on the idea that a trip is meant to educate and have an emotional impact, in the present moment and for the future, while remaining sustainable for local communities and the environment.
WALKING + CYCLING
Walking and cycling holidays are a great low impact way to see a destination in-depth and it means you get to visit smaller towns, meet local people and eat real local food. Our experts have experience on some of the worlds famous walks like the Camino de Santiago in Spain and the Kumano Kodo in Japan.
Let us know where you want to go and we will plan it for you. Our packages can be made to include flights, accommodation, transport, tours and insurance and anything else you might need! We even go as far as to find and recommend the best local restaurants so you can get away from the tourist traps! and of course, we make sure to recommend the most sustainable options in your chosen destination.
