To experience the Zagori area and Vikos Gorge in Greece, most visitors stay in one of the picturesque villages like Monodendri, Papingo, or Vikos village itself, which offer easy access to hiking trails within the region, including the famous Vikos Gorge; to get there, fly to Ioannina airport and then travel by taxi or bus to your chosen village; key activities include hiking the Vikos Gorge, exploring the traditional villages with their stone bridges, and enjoying local cuisine; be sure to check weather conditions before embarking on any hikes as the terrain can be challenging. 


Where to Stay:

  • Monodendri:

    Considered a convenient base due to its proximity to the Vikos Gorge, Vradeto Steps, and the Voidomatis River, with a good selection of restaurants and tavernas. 

  • Papingo:

    Another popular choice, offering a charming stone village setting surrounded by forests and mountains. 

  • Vikos Village:

    Provides stunning mountain scenery and is situated directly within the Vikos Gorge. 


How to Get There:

  • Fly to Ioannina Airport:

    The nearest airport to Zagori is Ioannina, from where you can reach your chosen village by taxi or public bus. 

  • Public Transport:

    Buses are available from major Greek cities like Athens and Thessaloniki to Ioannina. 

  • Local Transportation:

    Once in Zagori, you may need to rely on taxis or local transfers to reach specific villages and trailheads.

  • Hike the Vikos Gorge: The main attraction of the area, considered one of the deepest gorges in the world, with a challenging but rewarding trail. 

  • Explore Zagori Villages: Wander through the traditional villages with their stone bridges, old architecture, and local taverns.

  • Drakolimni (Dragon Lake): Hike to this alpine lake, known for its beautiful scenery

As a general rule, book 6 months in advance to get the best airfares, and 60-90 days in advance for the best rates on hotels if you dont mind where you stay. If you have a particular hotel or lodge in mind then simply book as far in advance as possible to avoid disappointment.
